♬Liner Notes♬: Welcome to 2015 and another great year of cutting edge new music from PUTV! Hopefully you caught our epic Best Of 2014 mixtape and are all primed and ready for more...

Sleater‐Kinney
"Bury Our Friends"
'No Cities to Love'
Sub Pop, 2015
Notes: "Sleater-Kinney's indefinite hiatus has come to an end. The Olympia, Washington trio has re-formed and recorded a powerful new song about perseverance, "Bury Our Friends," that lives up to its punk and indie rock pasts with big, slithering riffs and a ringing, anthemic chorus... the reunited trio will release their new LP No Cities to Love, a 10-track studio album featuring "Bury Your Friends," on January 20th through Sub Pop. The album was secretly recorded at San Francisco's Tiny Telephone Recordings earlier this year, with additional sessions taking place at Portland's Kung Fu Bakery Recording Studio and Seattle's Electrokitty. Producer John Goodmanson, who worked on four Sleater-Kinney albums, also returned to the fold for No Cities to Love."

Hippo Campus
"Little Grace"
'The Halocline'
self-released, 2015
Notes: "Maintaining a healthy all-ages scene can be a challenge for any community, but over the past few years the Twin Cities’ ratio of talented high school bands to respectable all-ages performance spaces seems especially skewed... four-piece rock band Hippo Campus, made up of ’13 grads from a charter high school in St. Paul, managed to emerge with a debut song and video that are at a higher quality than many of the veteran bands performing around town."
(@TheHalocline)

Ex Cops
"Black Soap"
'Daggers'
Downtown, 2014
Notes: "With [2013]’s promising True Hallucinations, New York’s Ex Cops offered a smart take on wistful and jangly indie pop... duo of Amalie Bruun and Brian Harding have...that record’s follow-up. Entitled Daggers, it was executive produced by Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan... the album’s lead single, “Black Soap”, a track which sees the two-piece trading in the jangle for more arena-ready atmospherics and bombastic hooks. Solidifying the band’s New York City status, it borrows from a hodgepodge of Big Apple’s music vets..." Like Blondie or Interpol... Love these guys, it's their 3rd spin on PUTV.
(@ExCops)

Will Butler
"Take My Side"
'Policy'
Merge, 2015
Notes: "This morning we saw Will Butler’s spazzy trailer for debut solo album Policy, and now the Arcade Fire member has shared that project’s lead single. It’s called “Take My Side,” and it’s a jumpy, wiry rock ’n’ roll track that fits in better with the Merge Records aesthetic than Arcade Fire’s own music does (see: the Spider Bags and Reigning Sound tracks that SoundCloud recommends when you listen to Butler’s song). “Are you gonna take my side?” he wonders aloud as guitars violently skitter to a relentless thumping rhythm. This thing’s got some anxious swing to it." The record drops on 3/10.
(@ButlerWills)

Fly Golden Eagle
"Stepping Stone"
'Quartz Bijou'
ATO, 2014
Notes: "Fly Golden Eagle is one of Nashville's most dynamic young rock bands... singer-songwriter Ben Trimble and the rest of the band impassively smash through the bluesy, brawling "Stepping Stone," from Fly Golden Eagle's new album Quartz Bijou." There's also a double-disc 'Quartz: Extended Edition' out now, as well.
(@FlyGoldenEagle)

Twilight Sad
"Last January"
'Nobody Wants To Be Here And Nobody Wants To Leave'
FatCat, 2014
Notes: "“Last January” is just about the perfect name for a Twilight Sad song, so wistful and frigid is the band’s wide-angle guitar rock. The track, from the melancholic Scottish rockers’ upcoming Nobody Wants To Be Here And Nobody Wants To Leave, sets their trademark brooding at a brisk tempo, building and building without ever quite exploding."
(@TheTwilightSad)

Laura Marling
"Short Movie"
'Short Movie'
Ribbon, 2015
Notes: "Laura Marling has unveiled the first track from her next album. Short Movie will be released on 23 March, and you can hear the title track... The album, which she produced herself with Matt Ingram and Dan Cox, will be [the formerly UK, now LA-based] Marling’s fifth album in seven years, and comes from her attempts to change her routines after a period of reflection."
(@LauraMarlingHQ)

David Strange
"Aztec Corn"
'David Strange EP'
self-released, 2015
Notes: "Opening with a wailing guitar riff straight outta Hendrix's back catalogue, followed closely by fuzzed-up psych vocals, this is one raunchy rock track. So who exactly is [NYC-based] David Strange? Well, he was a session musician, a touring guitarist for Courtney Love and he's recorded at Yoko Ono's home studio. Together with Charlotte Kemp Muhl (who produced, arranged, sung back-up vocals, played drums, and directed four of David's video clips), he's been busy preparing his debut EP, set for a January 20, 2015 release."
(@TheDavidStrange)

Viet Cong
"Silhouettes"
'Viet Cong'
Jagjaguwar, 2015
Notes: "Later this month, Viet Cong, the Calgary postpunk four-piece that features two former members of Women, will release their self-titled full-length debut, an absolute ass-kicker of an album...  ["Silhouettes"] burns and scrapes like the stuff on the band’s 2014 EP Cassette, but it has a new sort of majesty to it. “Silhouettes” has plenty in common with that first Factory Records wave of postpunk, and it also lurches and seethes like late-’90s math-rock."
(@VietCongBand)

Restorations
"Separate Songs"
'LP3'
SideOneDummy, 2014
Notes: "How you classify Philadelphia’s Restorations largely depends on your age. For those of an era beyond attending their 20-year high school reunion, Fugazi, Helmet and Archers of Loaf are touchpoints. Fan alumni of the Vans Warped Tour will likely err on the side of Lucero and Gaslight Anthem..."
(@Restorations)

Melody's Echo Chamber
"Shirim"
self-released, 2015
Notes: "Under the moniker Melody’s Echo Chamber, [Parisian] Melody Prochet makes shimmering and spacey pop gems with an immediacy that belies their depth. Formerly a member of the shoegaze-indebted outfit My Bee’s Garden, Prochet met Tame Impala mastermind Kevin Parker at a show, which led to the duo recording her first solo album in his studio in Perth, 2012’s Melody’s Echo Chamber." We played two of those 2012 tracks from MEC on PUTV.
(@MelodyProchet)

The Shivas
"Stalking Legs"
'You Know What To Do'
K, 2014
Notes: "Coming out of Portland, OR, The Shivas have been riding the wave of luscious lo-fi surf rock since 2006. Long time favorites of KEXP, the quartet have been steadily releasing an inexhaustible supply of quality EPs and LPs to appease their swelling fanbase. Recorded at Dub Narcotic Studios and mixed by Calvin Johnson, their latest offering, You Know What To Do, is the culmination of their talents..." The Shivas closed out Episode072 and gave it its "Swimming With Sharks" title track.
(@TheShivas)

JD McPherson
"Let the Good Times Roll"
'Let the Good Times Roll'
Rounder, 2015
Notes: "Produced by Mark Neill (The Black Keys) along with McPherson, ‘Let The Good Times Roll’ was recorded at Soil of the South Studio in Georgia... [The Broken Arrow, OK boy] McPherson comments, “Much of the new song material was asking for a different sonic treatment. I was thinking of these big, bombastic sounds; lots of guitars, tons of percussion; plate reverb.” In advance of the release, McPherson and his longtime band — Jimmy Sutton (upright bass), Jason Smay (drums), Ray Jacildo (keys) and Doug Corcoran (saxophone, guitar, keys) — will embark on a series of UK dates in January." It's JD's fourth go-round on PUTV.
(@JDMcPhersonJr)

FF
"Caught In a Dream"
'Lord'
Couple Skate, 2014
Notes: "Search for “Seattle” and “FF” and you’ll likely get film festival listings and Foo Fighters lyrics... FF’s DIY, grungy, underground punk aesthetic is familiar to us Pacific Northwesterners, especially those present in the 80s and 90s for the independent scene’s proliferation. Formed after lead singer Harley Thompson’s old band, Unreals, dispersed, FF features Claire Nelson on bass and vocals and Michael Abeyta on drums. Their shoegazy, grungy punk sound has one foot in the domain of the aforementioned Dave Grohl and the other in My Bloody Valentine’s territory."
(@CoupleSkateRecs)

This week's B-sides: Elephant Micah, Mark Kozelek & Jimmy LaValle, Dan Mangan + Blacksmith, Johnny Flynn, Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors, Strand of Oaks, Clark, The Amazing, Roger Sellers, Gaudi, Aaron Hedenstrom, Hey Rosetta! and Les Sins
